Draw the space around an object

When an object feels difficult to draw, look at the space beside it. The gap between a cup handle and its body has a shape of its own. So does the space under a chair or between two leaves.

Begin with a few light marks that describe the largest relationships. Compare angles and distances before adding detail. A simple object on a plain surface is a useful starting point because there are fewer competing edges.

The purpose of the exercise is observation, not a polished result. Keep the first attempt and repeat it later; the changes can show what you have learned to notice.
