Choose paper by trying a small sample

Paper changes how a mark behaves. A rough surface catches a dry pencil differently from a smooth one, while a wet medium can reveal how the sheet absorbs water. Labels are useful, but a small test tells you more about your own tools.

On a spare corner, make a light line, a dark line and a small shaded area. If you use water-based materials, test a modest wash and let it dry fully. Protect the work surface and follow the materials’ safety instructions.

Label the sample with the tools you used. A few saved tests form a practical reference that is easier to use than remembering how every sheet felt.
